How soft may a mattress be?

Too soft a mattress causes back pain in many people, because the spine is not sufficiently supported and sags. It is therefore medically healthier to sleep on a mattress that is too hard than too soft. How hard should a mattress be?

19 patients left the study during the trial month, the others were asked about their lumbar discomfort, their daily activities and the amount of their sleep hours at night. It turned out that Temper’s waterbed and mattress are more beneficial to the back problems, daily activities and sleep than the heavy futon mattress. However, these differences were not very large, as the researchers in the orthopedic journal "Spine" report.

For the subjects who had slept in one of the soft beds, the back problems improved slightly and they slept a little longer (less than an hour) than those who slept on the hard bed.
